Fleas can be a year round problem and our centrally heated homes provide the perfect environment for them to continue their lifecycle right through winter
Catch any flea problem early by using these simple techniques
The first step to getting rid of fleas in your home is to vacuum every nook and cranny. Fleas and their faeces, larvae, pupae and eggs will be in the cracks between floorboards, gaps under skirting, in beds and furniture, and in the carpet.
Empty the vacuum outside the house as the fleas will still be alive in the drum of the cleaner. This will remove much of the flea problem and the faeces which is the food of the larvae. But larvae will latch onto furniture and carpet fibres and may remain.
Step two is to wash - everything! Ideally above 60C to ensure larvae, eggs and any remaining fleas are killed. If the flea problem is extensive you may want to call in the Pest Doctor to treat carpets and furniture too large for your washing machine.
Groom pets regularly with a flea comb and talk to your vet about flea prevention for your pets to stop the problem repeating. Wash pet bedding every week again above 60C to control flea hotspots.
