We've all looked at the weather forecast this summer with green eyed jealousy of the weather our southern friends seemed to have enjoyed this summer. The north of England has had a particularly poor summer especially here in the North West.
The weather plays a big part in Pest Control. The summer of 2012 was a particularly poor season for Wasp colonies as the weather was so wet it killed off many of the Queens.
This year has seen the same type of weather patterns as 2012 but as far as the Wasp season goes -
We ain’t out of the woods yet!
If we get some late summer sun and plan a BBQ we could still see some significant wasp activity. Worse still these little critters are much more feisty as these are the ‘sweet feeders’ who are trying to replace a sweet substance no longer available from the nest so they are on the hunt with vengeance! Doughnuts, sweets, cakes, ciders and sweet/sugary drinks are all big attractants to wasps at this time of year. Wasps can travel up to a mile to and from their nest to forage for the sweet stuff we leave out or behind and will bring their relatives and friends to reap the rich pickings causing havoc at a family get together or in a beer garden.
Some helpful tips and hints include;
- Keep all food especially sweet sugary foods in an airtight container
- Put a cover over sweet drinks and cordials
- Clean down bbq’s after use
- Put food debris into a bin and make sure the lid is sealed
- Try to keep food smells down wind of where you are sitting so food smells blow away from you
All that said let’s keep our fingers crossed that we may get a late Indian summer to enjoy
